Abstract: INTRODUCTION: For an efficient breathing, it is necessary to coordinate the muscles of the chest cavity, being these responsible for the volumetric alteration evaluated by optoelectronic plethysmography (EOP). Thus, the objective is to identify the thoracoabdominal mobility profile during respiratory muscle strength test (FMR) in healthy individuals. METHODS: 12 male healthy subjects, submitted to analysis of thoracoabdominal mobility by POE, using the Qualysis analysis system. Data were obtained on total and compartmental tidal volume (VC), divided into upper thorax (TS), lower thorax (TI), upper abdomen (AS) and lower abdomen (AI). The FMR was performed during SOP, and the maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal inspiratory pressure (MEP) were measured by means of manovacuometry and dynamic inspiratory pressure (S-Index). RESULTS: The CV of the FMR tests was higher when compared to basal respiration (0.56 ± 0.14L) (p <0.005). In addition, the VC in the SIndex (3.1 ± 0.6L) was higher than the VC PImax (2.1 ± 0.7L) and MEP (1.7 ± 0.7L) (p <0.005). The compartmental VC was higher in the FMR tests when compared to baseline respiration (p <0.005), with the exception of the MEP in the AI. In the TS, TI and AS compartments, the VC in the S-Index obtained a value greater than VC in MIP and VC in MEP (p <0.05). The VC of AS had a greater contribution than the other compartments for the VC S-Index (1.14 ± 0.2L) and VC MIP (0.77 ± 0.2L) (p <0.005), with a difference between them (p = 0.001). There was a moderate positive correlation between the S-Index and the total VC (r = 0.7, p = 0.027) and between the S-Index and the final inspiratory volume (VF) (r = 0.76, p = 0.007). CONCLUSION: With this study we can observe the existence of a thoracoabdominal movement pattern, with a predominance of upper abdomen, during the FMR tests, where the S-Index obtained higher VC when compared to the other tests.
